tu es etiquetté "pinguouin" et NHL et j'en ai la preuve !
Monday, January 13, 2003 By Dejan Kovacevic, Post-Gazette Sports Writer The Penguins flew out of Pittsburgh yesterday afternoon for a five-game road trip which might well unravel their chances of qualifying for the Stanley Cup playoffs. They will play without Mario Lemieux for at least part of that journey. They will open in a city where they have been fairly tortured the past few years. And they will give a scrawny, 22-year-old kid a start in goal, his first in the NHL. Coach Rick Kehoe made official yesterday after practice at Mellon Arena that Sebastien Caron will get the nod tonight against the Boston Bruins at the FleetCenter. Caron relieved ineffective starter Jean-Sebastien Aubin in the 3-1 home loss Saturday to the New York Rangers and stopped all 18 shots he faced in the final two periods. "We all saw the way he came in," Kehoe said. "He shut the door and gave us a chance. It was good to see him jump in there and do the job for us." But relieving against the last-place Rangers in a game which seemed a lost cause by the first intermission is one thing. And facing the Bruins, the Eastern Conference's second-highest scoring team, with the burden of trying to help the Penguins end a three-game losing streak is quite another. Caron had allowed that he was "a little nervous" upon entering the game Saturday, but he showed not the tiniest trace of being rattled yesterday. More Penguins Coverage: Penguins vs. Bruins "It's going to be my first start, so it's going to be a little different," he said. "But the game's still the same, right? The puck's still the same." Asked if he might feel the pressure of having to carry a slumping team, he laughed. "No, I'm not there for saving the team like I'm God," he replied. "I'm just there to help as best I can. I mean, they told me to go in and play, so I'm just going to do my best. Hopefully, the guys are going to play well and give me a chance to help them out." If that sounded like an untested rookie was issuing a challenge to his veteran teammates, that would hardly be out of character. Caron is a vivacious sort who does little to keep his personality contained under any circumstance. In the game against the Rangers, for example, he didn't mince words when defenseman Ian Moran was screening him from a potential New York shot. "He yelled out, 'Hey, Mo! Get the [expletive] out of the way!'" Moran recalled, grinning. "I don't think he's got too many issues with getting adjusted to anything." Caron makes no apologies. |
