Fla. Man Allegedly Kept Body Parts

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A University of Florida neurologist professor was
arrested after police found preserved heads, brains, arms and other body parts
at his house, some stored in Tupperware containers.

Joseph James Warner, 49, was charged Tuesday with illegal storage and
preservation of human remains and with domestic battery, both misdemeanors.
He remained jailed on $5,000 bond Wednesday.

Warner told officers he "conducted research at his home, including dissections
of human and animal body parts," a police report said.

The university fired Warner on Tuesday from his job as an assistant professor.
The school had not given him permission to take home body parts, spokesman
Tom Nordlie said.

Warner had a contract with the university to help teach a neuro-anatomy
course, said university spokeswoman Arline Phillips-Han. He had worked at the
school since 1988.

Some of the more than a dozen body parts were labeled as UF property, police
said. Warner told police he didn't have a license to keep them in his house.

Officers searched the house as they responded late Monday to a domestic
battery complaint from Warner's wife, Debra.

Police also found a large cache of weapons and ammunition, including military
ordnance. The Army was called in to remove the ordinance, said police Cpl.
Keith Kameg. Court records show Warner is a sport shooter.

"The goal of this investigation is to identify all the remains as best we can.
We want to make sure they are treated respectfully," Kameg said.
