"Smart People," a major motion picture starring Dennis Quaid as an eccentric Carnegie Mellon English professor and Sarah Jessica Parker as his former student with whom he falls in love, will begin filming on campus Monday, Nov. 6 in Baker Hall. Parker was recently named to replace Rachel Weisz as one of the co-stars.
Thomas Haden Church will play the professor's adopted brother and Ashton Holmes will play a Carnegie Mellon student. The film's producer is Michael London, whose credits include "Sideways," "House of Sand and Fog" and "The Illusionist."
The filming schedule for "Smart People" will continue through Nov. 15 at various campus locations, including Baker Hall (Nov. 6-9), Hamburg Hall (Nov. 9), Hunt Library (Nov. 10), the Wean/Porter/Hamerschlag parking area (Nov. 10), Skibo Gymnasium and Donner Hall (Nov. 13-14), and Doherty Hall (Nov. 15). Film crews will return to Hunt Library to conclude their work on campus Dec. 5.
The above actual filming dates are subject to change and hours of set-up and tear-down will be needed. Parking will be limited on Frew Street from Sunday, Nov. 5 through Wednesday, Nov. 15 and on Margaret Morrison Street from Nov. 13 to Nov. 15.
"Wonder Boys" and "Mothman Prophecies," the last motion pictures to be filmed on campus, never used the Carnegie Mellon name, but this film will, says Marilyn Kail, Carnegie Mellon's assistant vice president for marketing communications. Kail also said students will be used as extras, production assistants and interns, and the university has requested a screening on campus before the release date.
Kail said she appreciates the enthusiasm and cooperation the campus community is showing for the project, particularly in light of the restrictions the filming will create for parking and space. She said any student, faculty or staff member who may be affected or displaced by the production has been notified and amenable arrangements have been made. |
